San Diego County COVID-19 Update – 3/23/2021 | News

Here is today’s COVID-19 update from the County Health and Human Services Agency with data through March 22.

Progress vaccination:

  • More than 1.59 million COVID-19 vaccine doses have been delivered in the region and more than 1.44 million have been recorded as being administered. This number includes county residents as well as those who work in San Diego County.
  • Of those vaccinated so far, more than 504,000 residents of the county, or 18.8% of San Diegans ages 16 and older, have been fully immunized.
  • In all, more than 823,000 County residents have received at least one injection of the vaccine with two doses. That’s 30.6% of those who qualify.
  • Those who receive the single-dose Johnson & Johnson vaccine are added to the total of fully vaccinated San Diegans.
  • The difference between the doses administered and the doses used in a vaccination roughly represents what is expected to be administered over the next seven days and the doses still to be entered into the registration system.

Status statistics:

  • The state-calculated, adjusted number of San Diego County cases is currently 5.5 cases per 100,000 residents. The County is in the Red Tier.
  • Currently, the test positivity rate is 2.4%, placing the County in Tier 3 or the Orange Tier.
  • The County health equity measure, which looks at the test positivity for areas with the lowest healthy conditions, is 3.4% and is also in the Orange Tier or Tier 3.
  • While two of the three statistics qualify the County for the Orange Tier or Tier 3, the state assigns counties to the more restrictive tier.
  • The California Department of Public Health reviews counties on a weekly basis. The next report is scheduled for Tuesday, March 30.

Outbreaks in the community:

  • No new outbreaks in the community were confirmed on March 22.
  • In the past seven days (March 16 to March 22), 16 outbreaks were confirmed in the community.
  • The number of outbreaks in the community remains above the trigger of seven or more in seven days.
  • A community outbreak is defined as three or more COVID-19 cases in an environment and in people from different households in the past 14 days.

To test:

  • 11,456 tests were reported to the county on March 22, and the rate of new positive cases was 2%.
  • The moving average percentage of positive cases over 14 days is 2.7%. Target is less than 8.0%.
  • The 7-day, daily mean of tests is 11,482.

Cases, hospital admissions and IC admissions:

  • On March 22, 243 cases of COVID-19 were reported to the County. The total of the region is now 268,160.
  • 13,969 or 5.2% of all cases require hospitalization.
  • 1,628 or 0.6% of all cases and 11.7% of hospitalized cases had to be admitted to an intensive care unit.

Deaths:

  • Four new COVID-19 deaths were reported on March 22. The total of the region is 3,498.
  • A woman and three men died between March 19 and March 21.
  • One person who died was in their 80s, one was in their 70s, one was in their 60s, and one was in their 50s.
  • They all had underlying medical conditions.
