Samsung dropped this morning as a short teaser about their next-gen Exynos SoC. Called “Exynos is back,” Samsung is revealing that there will be a good announcement for the new SoC on Jan. 12, which would drop on the first full day of CES.
As this is a teaser there are no details. But it’s worth noting that Samsung is promising “A whole new Exynos is coming”. Which is hopefully a sign that Samsung has been working hard over the years to improve their future designs.
While the most recent high-end Exynos designs (eg Exynos 990) were decent, they were overshadowed by the designs of rival Qualcomm – not to mention Apple’s own market-leading parts. The last few iterations of the chip have used Samsung’s own internal CPU core design, which never turned out as well as Samsung hoped, both in terms of overall performance and in staying ahead of Arm’s own licensing-focused designs.
Fittingly, Samsung has previously confirmed that they will use (back to) Arm’s cores in future designs, most notably the Cortex-X1, Arm’s big effort to double overall CPU performance. So it’s pretty much guaranteed that Cortex-X1 will appear in Samsung’s next-gen SoC, especially if they want to compete with Qualcomm’s X1-equipped next-gen Snapdragon.
In any case, we’ll have more on it in a few weeks when Samsung makes their announcement. So stay tuned.
