The Screen Actors Guild Awards don’t get as much fanfare from the general public as the Academy Awards, but it’s still an important night for the film industry, often setting a tonal precedent for the Oxcars. On March 14, they plan to roll out the proverbial red carpet and sacrifice it trophies for some of the most resonant performances of the past terrible year. But they won’t be alones throwing a pandemic-appropriate bash that night: with the recording academy recently rThe Grammys are shifting for the same night, we now have a classic “the popular kids throw a party on the same night as MY party” on our hands, and SAG isn’t too happy with this turn in the plot.

Deadline reports that SAG-AFTRA – which announced its plan to move its July event from January to March – is deeply disappointed in the Rapture Academy’s decision to share the date, which it announced in a statement Deadline: “We are extremely disappointed with the conflicting date, March 14, announced today for this year’s Grammy Awards broadcast. We announced the same date for the SAG Awards last July with the intention of providing the utmost consideration for other award shows. We expect the same consideration from sister organizations across the industry. “

If you think SAG-AFTRA is banking a little to heavy on the kindness from real strangers, remember those are optimism likely stems from an almost identical situation that has occurred last year. The difference is, wWhen the Guild heard that the Grammys had announced their broadcast for the same night – January 26, 2020 – SAG his event moved forward by a week out of courtesy. Is the asking too much for a little mutual courtesy? Probably not, but this is the same Recording Academy that suggested Justin Bieber deserves positive reinforcement for “Yummy” and paid The Weeknd nothing but dust. They don’t know about decency.

The Grammys have not responded to SAG-AFTRA and we can’t imagine they will, choosing to just go ahead with this kind of Plan C delay. But if the SAG Awards are looking for ideas here, there are plenty examples of the Party Scheduling Gambit trope on TV and film to take out. Hopefully they will come soon figure out how to throw a socially detached rager that will compete.
