GRANITE BAY (CBS13) – About 100 people attended a New Year’s Eve party in Granite Bay, despite an ongoing regional home order, a Placer County Sheriff’s Office spokesman confirmed on Sunday.
Spokesman Angela Musallam said delegates responded Thursday night to a noise complaint at a Vista De Lago Court mansion in the Los Lagos gated community near Folsom Lake. Musallam said no complaints were made and delegates left after the volume was reduced.
Videos circulating on social media indicate that the number of people attending the party could be much higher.
“The more events like this happen, the longer we have to stay closed to limit transmissions,” said Dr. Dean Blumberg. “Events like this are harmful to people’s health and the economy.”
Placer County is in the Greater Sacramento region, which is still under a regional door-to-door warrant due to a region-wide decline in ICU capacity as coronavirus cases continue to rise.
The region went under order three weeks ago as ICU capacity fell below 15%, and the order would be in effect for three weeks if that number improves. However, Saturday’s projections prompt officials to maintain order for the time being, as an expected increase due to the holiday is expected.
Dr. Blumberg, infectious disease specialist at UC Davis, believes the implications of the celebration could have a widespread impact.
“When there are more than 100 people, we know the transmission speed is relatively high, we know at least five or ten of them were able to broadcast,” Blumberg said.
“People have to make better choices. I personally would not have gone to a party with 10 people, ”said Rhonda Williams, a resident of Placer County.
On Monday, Sacramento Mayor Darrell Steinberg took to Twitter to criticize the party.

Sacramento social media influencer Zayn Silmi apologized Monday for attending the party after being seen in videos online.
Despite the state’s home order, some people choose to get together for the New Year. So what kind of increase can we see in the coming weeks? CBS13 receives answers.
The state saw an increase in the number of cases and deaths just two weeks after Thanksgiving. Based on projection models from the University of Washington, we could see an increase of nearly 19% in cases and nearly 24% in deaths by January 14.
“I honestly wouldn’t be surprised if the numbers were three times as high as they are now, because people just don’t want to take it seriously enough,” said Joey Montero.
Placer County Public Health is now advising people who went to the party or gathered on New Year’s Eve to get tested and stay at home.
“It’s a shame because it will affect a lot of people, but it is what it is and we can’t really change what happened,” said Williams.
Dr. Rob Oldham, Placer County Interim Health Officer, issued the following statement about the event:
“Public health has been informed of this event. With this and all other gatherings that have taken place during the holidays, we encourage participants to get tested and stay at home and away from others as much as possible.
If a person attending a large meeting tested positive and was considered contagious during the time period, contact tracking would attempt to identify a list of close contacts and a report would be made. Contact tracing is more difficult when contacts are geographically dispersed, and can also be hindered by a willingness to participate coupled with an increased level of community transfer. ”
