Thousands of people flocked to a bridge in Moscow overlooking the Kremlin to celebrate the sixth anniversary of the murder of a leading Russian opposition figure
MOSCOW – Thousands of people flocked to a bridge in Moscow overlooking the Kremlin on Saturday to lay flowers and celebrate the sixth anniversary of the murder of Boris Nemtsov, a leading Russian opposition figure.
Nemtsov, 55, a former Deputy Prime Minister, was shot dead as he walked past Bolshoy Moskvoretsky Bridge late at night on February 27, 2015.
Among those who attended Saturday’s memorial was Yulia Navalnaya, the wife of the imprisoned Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny.
Navalny’s detention in January after returning to Moscow after five months of recovery from nerve poisoning in Germany sparked a wave of nationwide protests.
Nemtsov was one of Russia’s most energetic and charismatic opposition members, and his death was a blow to President Vladimir Putin’s political opponents.
A security officer of the Kremlin-backed leader of Chechnya was sentenced to 20 years for firing the shots that killed Nemtsov. Four other men were sentenced to 11-19 years for involvement.
