President of the Peruvian Society of Intensive Medicine, Jesús Valverde, said Monday that the beds of the country’s Intensive Care Unit (ICU) have already collapsed due to the increase in severe cases of coronavirus (COVID-19).
In a conversation with RPP, he explained that patients come to health centers to be treated at the third level because they are in a serious condition, which has resulted in the supply being overcrowded in both hospitals and private centers.
“Today the hospital beds, which were the reserve of the hospitals, are already being filled. What we see is that the patient’s transition takes place directly from their home to hospitals on the third level. At this point we can say that the ICUs have already collapsed at the national level, our growth is taking place in vast areas outside the UCMe, ”he said.
In this sense, he argued that the solution to this problem is not only to increase the number of intensive care beds, but also to strengthen primary care and the timely detection of cases, to prevent them from evolving unfavorably.
“The pandemic has shown that there is a shortage of intensive care doctors across the country, we are experiencing a global crisis of intensive care doctors, it is happening all over the world, it is happening in Europe in North America and Peru was not here unknown in. Latin America does not have the number of intensivists comparable to the first world countriesor ”, he complained.
-Increase of IC beds-
It should be noted that the executive branch has taken extraordinary steps in economic and financial matters to strengthen the specialized health response systems against the coronavirus (COVID-19). Through the Emergency Decree No. 001-2021It is reported that 300 kits for intensive care units have been purchased.
The Minsa will supply the biomedical equipment to the entities of the health sector on the proposal of the Directorate-General of Health Operations (DGDC).
