Rumor: several parties interested in the buyout of Square Enix

Buy Square Enix

Ever since the first reports poured in about Microsoft buying up Bethesda (which turned out to be perfectly correct, of course), there has been no shortage of rumors of additional video game company acquisitions. Until now, however, none of these speculations have had any real weight.

However, there is a new rumor, and it comes from a reliable source in Bloomberg, Japan. According to a newly published report, multiple parties are interested in bragging about Japanese publisher Square Enix. However, this report is pretty light on the details – we don’t know if this refers to Square Enix as a whole, Square Enix’s video game business, or Square Enix’s wider entertainment business.

As such, we wouldn’t draw any conclusions just yet – but that warning won’t stop people from sparking rampant speculation online. After all, the aforementioned $ 7.4 billion takeover of Bethesda by Microsoft gives the feeling that anything is possible – although it is believed that buying Square Enix would be a lot more expensive.

Of course, it is difficult not to think about Sony’s situation as well at this point. The PlayStation creator clearly has a close relationship with Square Enix right now, with players like Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade (June), Final Fantasy XVI (TBA) and Forspoken (2022) all pinned down as PS5-exclusive consoles. But then Bethesda had made deals with Sony on Deathloop and Ghostwire Tokyo, right?

But again, we wouldn’t read too much in this report just yet. Large companies are always weighing their options, but that doesn’t necessarily mean anything will actually happen. We will keep you posted if more information comes out in the near future.
