Reintroduced the Sunshine Protection Act of 2021, which would “make daylight saving time permanent” and repeal the temporary eight-month period for daylight saving time for all states currently participating.

“The call to end the outdated practice of changing the clock is gaining momentum across the country,” Rubio said, according to a press release. “Studies have shown many benefits of year-round DST, which is why the Florida legislature voted in 2018 to make it permanent. Our nation’s families have more stability year-round.”

For Florida law to make DST permanent in the state, a change in federal statute is required. Other states have also passed similar laws regarding daylight saving time, but federal law currently only allows states to opt out of daylight saving time instead of opting for it permanently.

Rubio, along with the other senators, argued that making daylight saving time permanent would have other benefits for the country and the economy, including reducing the risk of seasonal depression, the agricultural economy and reducing energy consumption.

“The Sunshine Protection Act takes a logical step to provide much-needed stability to families in Oregon and across the country,” Wyden said in the release. “Jumping forward and falling back year after year only creates unnecessary confusion and harms the health of Americans and our economy. By making Daylight Saving permanent, people get an hour of sunshine in the winter months when we need it most. “
