Rover Persistence Captures First Dust Devil | video – Science – Life

CNET, the portal specializing in technology and science, reported that not long after landing, NASA’s Perseverance rover used a microphone to listen to the wind on Mars. Now he has also realized what that wind can do.

On Tuesdays, the NASA he shared the rover’s vision of a cloud of dust making its way through the Martian landscape.

The Perseverance team posted two GIFs on social media. One with a larger appearance and one with an enlarged image.

“You can see it in the distance behind my robotic arm in this enhanced / edited view,” NASA wrote. “The dust devil moves from right to left, causing dust swirls in its path.”

Mars is a notoriously dusty and windy place, making it the perfect environment for dust swirls, some of which can reach sky-high proportions.

The rover’s position provides a ground-level perspective of the phenomenon, which can sometimes also be seen from space. Earlier this month, NASA shared a snapshot of a whirlwind taken by his spaceship Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter

This may be the Perseverance vehicle’s first Dust Devil sighting, but it won’t be the last. NASA’s other working Mars rover, Curiosity, has seen its share of the energetic vortices.

Dust demons are not only fun to watch, they can also be useful for robot explorers. NASA is waiting for a whirlwind to clear the dust-laden solar panels on its Insight stationary lander.
