Rotary outages underway in Texas after Energy Emergency Alert Level 3 is issued, ERCOT says

The Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) has issued an Energy Emergency Alert (Level 3) for the state, meaning rotary outages are underway to reduce demand for the electrical system.

“We urge Texans to put safety first at this time,” ERCOT said in a tweet Monday morning.

ERCOT says traffic lights and other infrastructure can be temporarily without power.

ERCOT urged Texans to reduce their electricity usage before sending the Level 3 Energy Emergency Alert tweet. It had warned that rotary shutdowns would be necessary to protect the electrical system.

Here’s how you can help reduce electricity consumption according to ERCOT:

  • Set the thermostat to 68 degrees at home, or as low as is comfortable to bear.

  • Set the ceiling fans to winter mode by turning them clockwise to draw the warm air down.

  • Do not use large appliances (eg Ovens, washing machines and dishwashers).

  • Make sure doors and windows are properly sealed. Any light through the door indicates the ingress of cold air entering the house.

  • Turn off lights, computers and other electronic devices whenever possible.
