Rosie Perez says “it hurts” that she has never been invited to the Oscars since the 1994 nomination

Rosie Perez revealed why fans never see her at the Academy Awards, despite having previously been nominated.

The 56-year-old actress explained that she has not been invited to the Oscars since her nomination for Fearless in 1994 during an interview with Variety on Thursday.

“Not even to sit in the audience, not to present, nothing – and I’m a member of it,” said the disappointed star of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

As the entertainment industry continues to face backlash from lack of representation, calls for more projects honoring diversity have only grown.

As Rosie points out, Hollywood is taking too long to develop: “Change is underway, but it’s too damn slow.”

Variety cited a 2018 study from the Motion Picture Association of America that found Latinos had the highest number of moviegoers among ethnic groups.

However, they also noted a 2019 study from the USC Annenberg Inclusion Initiative, which found that only 4.5% of all 47,268 speaking or named characters in the top-grossing films from 2007 to 2018 were Latino, as well as only 3% of the lead or co-protagonists.

Rosie was last seen on the HBO Max hit The Flight Attendant opposite Kaley Cuoco, which she said was a much more accommodating production than she was used to.

The 93rd Academy Awards will be presented on April 25, so there is still time to turn the tide.
