Elected Senator and now Senator of her own, Rosamar Trujillo Plumey, was able to curse today, as did her colleagues, by being able to hand over the only document missing to get her official certification by the State Election Commission (CEE).
“I thank all the citizens who have put their trust in me to represent them as their district senator. Today I assure you that I will work tirelessly for each of you and restore confidence in your lawmakers among our Puerto Rican people, ”he said in written statements.
This morning, Trujillo Plumey was the only elected senator who could not complete the swearing-in process, as her authorized public accountant had been unable to hand over a financial report to the state election commission to eventually be certified.
Trujillo Plumey was sworn into the Senate Chamber along with the secretary of the legislative body, Manuel Torres. The new senator tried to post a photo of her deceased parents nearby: the former mayor of Humacao, Rosamar Trujillo Plumey and Rosa Elena Plumey.
The historic day for Governor Pedro Pierluisi began early in the morning when he arrived at Supreme Court headquarters to take part in the official swearing-in before Presiding Judge Maite D. Oronoz Rodríguez.
Pierluisi then moved to the Capitol, where he would participate in the symbolic swearing-in ceremony in front of about 400 guests, despite active restrictions banning crowds to prevent the spread of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus.
Before Pierluisi entered the steps of the House of Laws to begin the ceremony, he received a commemorative document to mark the historic occasion.
Activity finally began around 11 a.m. with Pierluisi’s departure to the prepared platform for the Capitol.
The event’s entertainment was conducted by veteran composer, singer-songwriter and producer Ángel “Cucco” Peña, who conducted the members of the Puerto Rico Philharmonic Orchestra.
The ceremony was attended by important public and political figures, such as the outgoing governor Wanda Vázquez Garced, in a cream-colored dress.
Vázquez Garced was sworn in as governor of Puerto Rico in August 2019 following the resignation of Ricardo Rosselló Nevares from office.
Several former governors also performed, including former Popular Democratic Party (PPD) leaders Aníbal Acevedo Vilá (left) and Alejandro García Padilla (right).
Former Governor of the New Progressive Party (PNP) Luis Fortuño and his wife, Lucé Vela, also attended the ceremony.
The resident commissioner in Washington, Jenniffer González, was in attendance, but would later return to the United States to be sworn in in her third position.
During the formal ceremonies, several guests from different sectors of the Puerto Rican population gave speeches.
The symbolic swearing-in finally began at 11:30 am when Pierluisi placed his left hand on a Bible held by his role, the engineer Jorge Pierluisi Díaz, and in front of the President of the Supreme Court, Maite D. Oronoz Rodríguez.
After completing the symbolic act and hearing at least 12 cannon shots, Pierluisi offered his first message to the country as its own governor.
In the message, Pierluisi said he will run a government that is free from corruption, diverse and inclusive, and that he will fight all “enemies” of Puerto Rico, internal or external.
Among the “enemies” he mentioned, he included crime, failures in the education system, the political status of the island before the United States, the economy and the island’s reconstruction since the devastating passage of Hurricane Maria in 2017.
He also stressed that one of his priorities will be to fight the COVID-19 pandemic in Puerto Rico.
Likewise, he recognized the diversity in the makeup of the legislature and pledged to work towards negotiating agreements for the benefit of Puerto Rico.
Unlike previous oaths, Pierluisi chose to drive the road from the Capitol to La Fortaleza by car. The governor then walked on foot from Fortaleza Street to his new residence.
Before Pierluisi and his sister arrived at the Palace of Santa Catalina, Caridad entered the Church of the Servants of Mary, located near the Governor’s residence, to pray and receive blessings.
Due to active restrictions imposed by Vázquez Garced’s final executive order, the crowd was not allowed to receive Pierluisi in front of La Fortaleza.
Despite the restrictions, a large group of journalists and guests received him when he entered through the gate.
In the same way, Pierluisi was received by several members of his family.
Pierluisi greeted one of his relatives upon arrival in La Fortaleza.
As usual, Pierluisi came to the main balcony of the house to greet those present.
Pierluisi took the opportunity to introduce La Fortaleza’s mascot and family, Amaia.
Although it has a large family, not all members were pregnant at the ceremony.

In this way, Pedro Pierluisi became the 12th Governor of Puerto Rico under the Commonwealth Constitution (ELA).
