Robotics: Kitchen assistant cooks 5,000 recipes from scratch – and even does the dishes afterwards

Meal prep is now considerably easier thanks to a robotic kitchen assistant that cooks 5,000 different recipes from scratch – and even does the dishes.

Developed by Moley Robotics of the UK, the cooking machine features two handy hands and is modeled to emulate 2011 MasterChef winner Tim Anderson.

The ‘Automated Kitchen’ can take ingredients from a smart fridge, fill pans, mix, pour, adjust the temperature of the hob and serve – just like a regular chef would.

However, unlike a human, he will never complain about having to do the dishes.

The Automated Kitchen is the product of a collaboration of about 100 engineers and designers – along with three award-winning chefs – and it took six years to be fully realized and market-ready.

The robot uses a combination of sensors and cameras to navigate its way and locate ingredients, cooking utensils and utensils in the kitchen.

Markings on the handles and lids of the stainless steel cookware allow the system to properly orient the pots, pans and utensils while it is working.

Meanwhile, the cameras allow it to detect and clean up spilled food – while an integrated ultraviolet lamp helps rid the kitchen surface of germs.

The purchase of the robot chef and its integrated kitchen, Moley Robotics said, will cost you about the same amount as a ‘conventional luxury kitchen’ – roughly in the region of £ 30,000 – 55,000, depending on the exact configuration.

The ‘internet of things’ equipped kitchen is also available on its own, they said, and includes a smart fridge and a storage area that alerts when ingredients are nearing their expiration date, along with an oven, induction hob and sink.

Prior to the system’s launch at the Gulf Information Technology Exhibition in Dubai last week, Mr. Anderson and fellow chefs Andrew Clarke and Nicole Pisani devised 30 special recipes to put the robot to the test.

Moley Robotics has said the system will be updated with new meal plans every month – with the goal of creating a database of 5,000 standard recipes to which owners can then add their own favorites.
