Robinson Chirinos signs with the Yankees

The New York Yankees have reached one minor league agreement with veteran-wide receiver and free agent Robinson Chirinos, according to The Athletic’s leading journalist Ken Rosenthal. Chirinos, 36, has been a very good forward since winning a regular with the Rangers in 2014, but he hit duty at an inopportune time this winter following a tough season split between Texas and the Mets.

Chirinos hit only a .162 / .232 / .243 line with a homerun and an ISO of .081 82 at bats in 82 at bats. Those numbers paled when compared to the .235 / .331 / .445 mark with 85 HR that Chirinos achieved in 1,953 AP between the Rangers and Astros in the previous six seasons.

Chirinos has never been known as a major defensive asset, but if the Yankees are confident he will bounce back to the plate, he could push Kyle Higashioka for his backup role behind starter Gary Sanchez.

Higashioka is the personal wide receiver of ace Gerrit Cole, although Chirinos caught Cole in 2019 when they were members of the Astros. It will be the tenth season in MLB for the person born on June 5, 1984 in Punto Fijo, Venezuela.
