Roberto Reyes, “Primo Chomo”, was and will be the most polished Salvadoran on national radio

Famous for his program “La hora de la Cucharada”, the actor, journalist, comedian and broadcaster chose the national artist throughout his media career. His remains will be veiled at modern funerals and will rest in the La Resurrección de San Salvador Memorial Park.

With his tigüilote eyes, smart and unencumbered, with the scent of good grass, just as it sounds and sounds, the most witty of all Salvadorans, Gerónimo Alumbración Silverio Calixto de la Concepción, better known as Primo Chomo, has said goodbye.

Roberto Reyes, the ingenuity and talent behind the popular national radio personality, died at 11 a.m. on April 1, 2021 as a victim of renal failure and pneumonia that became complicated. This was reported by his son, Roberto Reyes Jr, “Chomito”, who inherited the versatility that was so characteristic of his famous father.

The comedian and announcer also shared the news in the early hours of April 2 on his Twitter wall, generating a wave of support and affection from those who knew and admired his father.

“Chomito, as I told you a while ago, God knows what he’s doing. He has already met your mother in heaven. It’s better. It’s God’s plans. You have to accept them and try to understand them. May Primo Chomo rest in peace and thank you for so much joy, ”announced announcer Pencho Duque.

It should be noted that throughout his career in the art scene and media, Primo Chomo chose the national artist. “He always wanted even the ‘smallest’ lead, or the one who started, to get ahead,” recalls the host of the program “Muy Salvadoreño” on Radio La Chévere, Alfredo Barahona, who also had a nice friendship with Reyes.

As a promoter of Salvadoran artists, Barahona found a great ally in Primo Chomo. “He always asked me about the music of all the national artists, even if they were the so-called little ones …”, emphasized Barahona.

For Reyes, the Salvadoran is polished! and for this reason he tried to bring together in the personality of his most famous character the characteristics of the land of cuscatleco. He fondly designed Chomo, as he said in an interview with the newspaper Más !, in September 2011, in which he stated that his character would “outlive” him.

“… El Primo is a character that I designed with love. Besides, it is something that will outlive me. A character never gets old, the one who plays him is the one who pulls out all the stops, ”he said on the occasion.

While Chomo helped him win the affection of radio listeners, Reyes created various characters throughout his life, such as Polidoro Caspiruleta, who came out in his eagerness to tell jokes, and Laureano Camándula, a sports comedian.

His journey through Salvadoran comedy dates back to the 1960s, after graduating from the School of Fine Arts Theater, where he joined the cast of performers at that institution; This allowed him to participate in the First Central American Theater Festival. His passion for acting began in his youth, when he grew old to be able to read short scripts in popular radio soap series.

Great radio talents, such as Teresa Moreira, Mauricio Bojórquez, Leonardo Heredia, Francisco Medina Funes and Albertico Hernández, have influenced him. Later he would share the stage with the famous Cujucuyo comedian, Aniceto Porsisoca

He also had the opportunity to act in the Mexican movie “Solo de noche vienes” (1965), starring Julio Alemán and Elsa Aguirre, which was eventually filmed in El Salvador and was part of the Artistic Caravan which was the national left territory.

He performed the speech at various stations, where he brought the charisma and ingenuity of his characters. For example, it was part of radio YSKL, Radio Cuscatlán, Radio Diez and Radio Fiesta. He also worked on channels 8 and 10, where he presented the newscast Tele 10 and his Super 8 program.

Reyes created Chomo in the 1980s, motivated by his radio colleagues, the Yellow Fever group, Tito Flores and a colleague they called “El Barbarazo”. In August 2013, he received an award in Los Angeles, California, during the August holiday celebrations, as part of his 35-year artistic career.

His remains will be buried in La Resurrección Memorial Park on April 3.
