Robbery suspect killed, baby injured in SW Houston shooting, police say

HOUSTON – A robbery suspect is dead and a bystander’s baby was injured after a shooting Wednesday, Houston police said.

Officers said the shooting took place in block 7900 of Southwest Freeway at around 11:35 PM

According to Houston police officers saw a vehicle suspected of a robbery. The suspect did not budge and a chase followed, police said.

Investigators said the chase went to Beltway 8 and then the Southwest Freeway feeder road. The suspect then crashed and stopped at a gas station, Jack’s Grocery, at 7931 Southwest Freeway, police said.

“People need to think about other people’s lives before doing things,” said Jack Abdullah, the gas station owner.

Officers said the suspect then got out and jumped into another vehicle, where a mother tried to fill up with gas in her vehicle. As they approached the suspect, the police said they saw a weapon.

Police said a 15-year-old HPD veteran fired multiple shots at the suspect, killing him in the process.

During the incident, investigators said a 1-year-old baby was hit by gunfire while sitting in the backseat.

Police said officers tried to provide medical treatment to both the baby and the suspect before the EMS arrived. According to a release, the child was transported to hospital by ambulance in a stable condition.

“That lady and her son have to experience this. It’s very disturbing, and I feel sorry for the family, ”said Abdullah.

According to investigators, no agents were injured in the incident.

We have fully cooperated with the police. Today we stand behind the community and offer our sincere condolences to this child and his mother. “
