Last night my Twitter feed was all about Riot Games announcing a League Of Legends MMO. However, this excitement didn’t come from the revelation itself, but more from the way it was revealed. There was no major marketing ploy or tantalizing teaser trailer, no – a Riot manager just casually tweeted it.
I bet their PR department has a field day.
“My recent job at Riot was to help develop the League universe, which is what we’re going to need!” vice president of IP and entertainment Placed Greg Street. ‘Cause it’s time. My new job is to start a big (some might say gigantic) game that many of you, and a lot of Rioters, have asked us to make. “
It was probably enough teasing that he said “huge” which led to fans asking in his mentions and asking the important questions.
“Tell me now … IS IT AN MMO?” “@RichelleLOL” asked. “Can I choose my waifu’s clothes and hairstyle ?!”

Okay, cool, then just announce that.
Greg Street was World Of Warcraft’s chief systems designer at Blizzard for five years before moving to Riot, so it makes sense that he knows about their MMO.
Riot has since told PCGamer that, yes, that’s something they make: “Greg’s tweet is our only official statement at this point. I can confirm he will be working on a massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG). “
No specific details about this MMO have been shared yet, but it strongly implies that it is set in the League Of Legends universe, Runeterra. Street mentions that they are currently hiring people for the game so it may be a while before we hear more about it.
Riot seems pretty determined to play a game in as many genres as possible right now. In recent years they have released card game Legends Of Runeterra, autochess battler Teamfight Tactics and first-person shooter Valorant. Then they work on a LoL esports manager, a mysterious multiplayer game, a fighting game, the single-player platformer Conv / rgence and turn-based RPG Ruined King to boot.
They also have a pretty successful virtual pop group and cartoon series.
