PARIS (AP) – Ravers at an underground, curfew-busting New Year’s Eve party that drew at least 2,500 people in western France, attacked police sent to shut them down, setting one of their vehicles on fire and officers were injured with bursts of bottles and stones, officials said Friday.
Ravers aboard hundreds of vehicles began gathering in hangars in Lieuron, Brittany, Thursday night to celebrate the New Year, the regional government said in a statement Friday.
The police and their vehicles were attacked when they tried to stop the ravers from installing their party gear, he said.
Some officers suffered minor injuries, the statement said. Friday morning, 2,500 ravers from France and abroad were still partying, surrounded by a reinforced police presence, he said. First aiders handed out masks and handles to limit the spread of the corona virus.
Prosecutors are looking at a range of possible criminal charges. The party also took place despite the nationwide curfew from 8pm to 6am in France, intended to discourage public gatherings during the pandemic.
