Restaurants and startups are trying to stay ahead of Uber Eats and DoorDash

Apps like DoorDash and Uber Eats have provided restaurants with a flow of customers during the pandemic. Now, a myriad of food ordering tools, along with some restaurants, are finding ways to get around those apps and the commissions they charge.

DoorDash Inc., Eats and Grubhub Inc. Uber Technologies Inc. restaurants can charge up to 30% of every order – a chunk many owners say dents pay off even with more orders coming in.

A new line of services promises to order online at a lower cost to eateries by letting the restaurants arrange more deliveries themselves.

Chipotle Mexican Grill Inc., Shake Shack Inc. and a growing number of chains have recognized the cost of app-based delivery jobs, and many say they plan to address it. Local governments from New York to Seattle have enforced rules that limit costs for delivery apps in an effort to keep restaurant costs in check while the health crisis keeps people at home.
