Researchers have built an AI that recognizes and rewards good dogs

You may soon be able to use an AI system to train your dog to sit. A few researchers at Colorado State University have developed an artificial intelligence system that detects when a dog is sitting, standing, or lying down. If your furry friend takes the correct position on your command, the system will reward your dog by automatically feeding a treat via a servo motor.

Computer science graduates Jason Stock and Tom Cavey used NVIDIA’s Jetson edge AI to create the system. They trained it using more than 20,000 labeled images of dogs in different positions.

The duo’s willing volunteer was Henry, Cavey’s Australian Shepherd. Using a camera, the system was able to analyze Henry’s position in a fraction of a second. It had a test accuracy of up to 92 percent at about 39 frames per second, according to Stock and Cavey’s paper.

The researchers suggest that dog trainers and owners can use the system as a learning tool so that you can remotely train your very good dog when you eventually get back to the office. It can also be another way to treat your puppy while you are away from home.
