Private coach John Beck, a former NFL quarterback who played for then-offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan in Washington, teamed up with Ohio state quarterback Justin Fields on this off-season. Beck remains closely associated with Shanahan and has worked with North Dakota quarterback Trey Lance for the past few weeks.
That is no coincidence.
Fields and Lance are among the most likely candidates to be voted # 3 by the San Francisco 49ers. ESPN’s Dan Graziano reports that Lance worked with Beck at the request of the Niners.
San Francisco gave Beck a list of exercises they wanted to see from Lance, meaning they were deeply involved in planning Monday’s workout.
🧵 I have been told the 49ers are extremely involved in the Trey Lance training scheduled for Monday. Lance, who works with QB coach Quincy Avery, has been working with QB coach John Beck for the past few weeks. Kyle Shanahan coached Beck in Washington ten years ago and trusts his opinion.

I was told that Lance started working with Beck at the request of Shanahan and the Niners coaching staff provided Beck with a list of exercises they wanted Lance to work on prior to Monday’s workout. In fact, the 49ers designed the workout and will lend a hand in administering it.

Other teams, including the Atlanta Falcons, are also expected to be in attendance Monday.
Other teams are expected to attend, including the Falcons and Washington, according to sources, but obviously Lance is being considered for the 49ers at pick No. 3.

It’s worth noting, of course, that Beck is also teaming up with Justin Fields, who along with Mac Jones also qualifies for the 49ers at pick # 3.

“I know how he’s going to coach quarterbacks,” Beck recently said of Shanahan in an interview with The Athletic. ‘I know what he’s looking for. So I think it’s an easy extension of Kyle in terms of the eyes I have for quarterbacks. ‘
San Francisco’s deep involvement in the planning of Lance’s second pro day could indicate that the team is really serious about the former Bison being an option for the No. 3 overall pick.

Zierlein: Trey Lance is the perfect playmaker for Kyle Shanahan’s 49ers
By David Bonilla
April 10, 2021
It’s been nearly two weeks since NFL Media analyst Lance Zierlein released his latest mock concept. In it, he had the San Francisco 49ers select Trey Lance of North Dakota State with the # 3 overall pick instead of Justin Fields of Ohio State or Mac Jones of Alabama. It doesn’t sound like his opinion of what head coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch should be doing on April 29 has changed. While Zierlein’s colleagues Steve Wyche and Maurice Jones-Drew made excellent arguments for Fields as the choice of San Francisco, Zierlein stuck to his choice of Lance and defended the decision during a segment on the NFL Network. “This is the man who should be San Francisco

Justin Fields from Ohio state is holding a second professional day training on Wednesday. Five days later, Trey Lance from the state of North Dakota takes part in his second. Both are trying to make sure they are selected ahead of Mac Jones from Alabama. Trevor Lawrence of Clemson is expected to be drafted No. 1 overall. The New York Jets are expected to select BYU’s Zach Wilson at number 2. Assuming San Francisco is targeting a quarterback, it leaves Jones, Fields and Lance as San Francisco’s picks at number 3. Jones is the overwhelming favorite to pick . if you ask members of the national media. Fans much prefer the more athletic, higher-ceilinged outlook in Fields of Lance. Head coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch chose to leave Jones’
