Rep. Boebert clashes with Capitol Police over metal detector

A congressman packing his guns turned off a suddenly installed metal detector in the Capitol – and refused to let the police look through her bag.

Freshman Representative Lauren Boebert (R-Colo.) Was denied access to the home’s room following the Tuesday night incident, the Denver Post said.

Boebert was later seen entering the room to cast a vote, but it was unclear if she still had her bag with her, the report said.

Boebert, a fierce champion of gun rights, later tweeted, “I am legally allowed to carry my firearm in Washington, DC and within the Capitol complex.”

Boebert also said the metal detectors installed at the entrances to the House room earlier Tuesday “would not have stopped the violence we saw last week,” as supporters of President Trump stormed the Capitol.

She called the added security measure “just another political stunt” by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.).

In a statement Tuesday afternoon announcing the new metal detectors, acting House Sergeant-at-Arms Timothy Blodgett reminded lawmakers that firearms are prohibited in the room.

“Failure to complete screening or carrying prohibited items may result in denial of entry into the Chamber,” he added.

Blodgett was sworn in on Monday to replace Paul Irving, who resigned as the House’s sergeant-at-arms following the deadly siege of the Capitol on Jan. 6.
