BOSTON (Neth.) – Randy Arozarena misjudged a JD Martinez flyover, which turned into a two-run double, and the Boston Red Sox defeated the Tampa Bay Rays 6-5 on Tuesday-evening.
The Rays seemed on their way to victory before Christian Vázquez found a pitch from Dominican Diego Castillo, with a 0-2 count, and hit the ball over the “Green Monster” for a homer to level the game in the ninth chapter.
Martinez hit an RBI double in the eighth inning for the Red Sox, who scored their second win after starting the season 0-3.
Manuel Margot hit a two-run single for the Rays, which gave a good six-inning run to starter Tyler Glasnow. Tampa Bay lost the first game of the series 11-2 on Monday and lost three.
The Rays also took the lead in the top of the twelfth inning.
With two outs and runners on second and third base on a wild pitch by Ryan Thompson, Martinez turned the ball into rightfield. The Cuban Arozarena turned and threw himself back towards the fence as the ball went over his head for the decisive blow.
The victory went to the Dominican Phillips Valdez (1-0).
For the Rays, Cubans were Yandy Díaz 5-0 with a run scored, Arozarena 5-1 with an RBI. The Dominicans Margot 5-1 with two RBI’s, Willy Adames 5-2 with an RBI, Francisco Mejía 3-1.
For the Red Sox, Mexican Alex Verdugo 4-1 with two runs scored. The Dominicans Rafael Devers 5-2, Francy Cordero 2-1. The Puerto Rican Vázquez 4-1 with a goal scored and an RBI, Kiké Hernández 3-0. The Venezuelan Marwin González 5-0.
