Pedro Martínez is one of the great figures the Boston Red Sox has had in its history. The pitcher, known for his work in the 2004 American League Championship Series, had his best years with this organization. But something that may seem unusual is something he recently confessed. Pedro Martínez stated to be a huge fan of the New York Yankees, despite the rivalry his ex-team and the Bronx have in MLB.
Pedro Martínez stated to journalist Rich Eisen, in an interview, that when he was part of the Los Angeles Dodgers, a team with which he made his MLB debut; asked to be traded to the New York Yankees. However, this cannot be.
Speaking to Eisen, Martínez also said that his fanaticism was such that when he arrived in Las Mayores from the Dominican Republic, he only had $ 250, purchasing a ball signed by the Yankees emblem, Reggie Jackson.
Despite Martinez’s aforementioned intention to be sent to the Yankees, he explained that he understood that “if you’re a bargaining chip, you can’t decide where to go, and besides, you can’t be a fan of a team.”
We don’t know what MLB history would have been like if Pedro Martinez had played for the Yankees. But we know that after the Dodgers, he went through the Montreal Expos and later through the Boston Red Sox, with whom he defeated the Yankees in the legendary 2004 American League Championship Series.
