BOSTON (Neth.) – Kiké Hernández led off the game with a homerun that required video review and Bobby Dalbec traded a 14-pitch walk in a six-run first inning that brought the Red Sox to an 11-4 victory over the Chicago White Sox in the first. Patriot Day game played without coinciding with the Boston Marathon.
The marathon will be run on Oct. 11 due to restrictions imposed by the state of Massachusetts to avoid massive public congregations as a result of the coronavirus pandemic. The Patriots Day game, which usually starts shortly after 11 a.m., has been held in Fenway Park since 1959. Only 4,738 fans showed up.
Lucas Giolito (1-1) was removed with two men in circulation with no outs in the second. He gave up eight runs – seven earned – and eight hits, taking his ERA from 2.55 to 5.79.
Nathan Eovaldi (3-1) tied his career high with 10 strikeouts in 6 1/3 innings, good for four runs and nine walk-free hits.
JD Martinez produced two runs with a solo homerun and a single, while Alex Verdugo hit a solo homerun.
For the White Sox, Cubans José Abreu 4-0, Luis Robert 4-1, an RBI; and Yasmani Grandal 3-0. The Dominicans Yermín Mercedes 4-1 and Leury García 4-1, one scored.
For the Red Sox, Puerto Rican Kiké Hernández 6-2, two runs and one RBI; and Christian Vázquez from 5-3 scored two. Mexican Alex Verdugo 4-3, two scored and one RBI. The Dominicans Rafael Devers 3-2, two scored and one RBI; and Franchy Cordero 4-2, two RBI’s. Venezuelan Marwin González 3-1, one scored and one RBI.
