R&B Artist Trey Songz Arrested During AFC Championship Game

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – R&B artist Trey Songz was jailed overnight after tampering with police officers during his arrest for not following coronavirus protocols and other rules during the AFC championship game in Kansas City, the police Monday.

Songz, 36, whose name is Tremaine Aldon Neverson, was released on Monday while an investigation is underway, Jackson County Sheriff LeVanden Darks spokesman said. No charges have been filed.

Songz’s representative, Sydney Margetson, declined to comment on Monday.

Songz is a three-time Grammy-nominated singer. He earned his third No. 1 on Billboard’s Top R&B Albums chart last year with “Back Home.” His other two top albums are ‘Trigga’ and ‘Tremaine The Album’. He has also appeared in such films as “Texas Chainshaw 3D”, “Baggage Claim” and he starred in “Blood Brother” in 2018.

In October, Songz on Instagram that he tested positive for COVID-19. He said he took the disease very seriously and urged his fans to do the same.

Kansas City Police said in a statement that at the game between the Kansas City Chiefs and Buffalo Bills, fans complained about a man not following COVID-19-related protocols and other fan code of conduct rules, including not being disruptive, drunk, or with obscene language.

The statement did not identify the man as Songz and did not say exactly what rules he was breaking.

Police said the man refused to obey the orders of private security guards at Arrowhead Stadium and was asked to leave. When he refused, officers from Kansas City Police and the Jackson County Sheriff’s office were called and told he would be arrested if he disobeyed, police said.

He hit an officer and put him in a headlock, police said.

TMZ has released a video On Monday, it was revealed that Songz was not wearing a mask and wrestled with several agents before being taken away in handcuffs.

The video does not show how the confrontation started. Some fans can be heard yelling at cops to leave him alone.

The video shows at least one officer without a mask and others with masks that do not completely cover their mouth and nose.

Kansas City police told The Associated Press that agents running Chiefs games “comply with all mask mandates.”

“He clearly had his mask on before he was attacked and put in a headlock,” KCPD spokeswoman Donna Drake said in an email.

Law enforcement officials said several agencies are running NFL games, making it difficult to know how many other fans were turned away or arrested on Sunday.

Earlier this month, Songz was scheduled to perform at a concert in Houston but the police shut it down after seeing hundreds of people queuing to enter the venue, which would operate at 50% capacity.

Songz was charged in 2017 with felony assault and assault on a police officer after he became upset when told to end a gig in Detroit. Authorities said microphones and speakers were thrown off the stage during the concert.

Songz pleaded guilty to two counts of disturbance of the peace in August 2017 and was sentenced to 18 months probation.
