The mask, called Project Hazel, which is currently a concept and not for sale, addresses “ the environmental concerns of disposable masks while improving the properties of a multi-use personal protective cover, ” according to a Razer press release, published Tuesday.
The company, a major hardware manufacturer known for computer mice and laptops, says the mask uses a medical-grade N95 respirator; detachable and rechargeable fans; and air flow controls.
The fans can be charged and disinfected by placing them in the wireless charging box, which is equipped with UV disinfecting lamps.
The company said the waterproof, scratch-resistant mask is made from recyclable plastic, further reducing its impact on the environment.
The transparent design of the mask allows people to see the wearer’s face, and the lights in the mask are automatically activated in the dark. A microphone and amplifier amplify muted speech.
And wearers can customize their look by activating two lighting zones with a choice of 16.8 million colors and a variety of dynamic lighting effects.
“The Project Hazel smart mask concept is intended to be functional, yet comfortable and useful for interacting with the world while maintaining a social aesthetic,” said Min-Liang Tan, Razer co-founder and CEO in the release.
There is no set release date for the mask as it is still being refined, a Razer spokesperson told CNN.
Earlier during the coronavirus pandemic, Razer converted manufacturing facilities in China to make face masks.
And in May, the company, headquartered in both Singapore and Las Vegas, said it would be handing out millions of free face masks in Singapore as the country grappled with an increase in coronavirus cases.
