NFL Network reporter Mike Garafolo reported this morning that the San Francisco 49ers have taken a big step to re-sign offensive tackle Trent Williams, who is expected to test free agency. NFL insider Ian Rapoport reported the same thing, but added a tidbit about another impending free agent from the 49er as the negotiating window approaches.
“And then Jason Verrett, one of the coolest stories in the NFL, spent most of his career injured, and last year he was a full-time starter and played incredibly well,” said Rapoport. “A bid for the 49ers’ table. He hasn’t taken it yet, and as we get closer to 12 o’clock (East), of course, the more likely a player will test the market. Fran. “
For the first time since his 2015 campaign, which resulted in a Pro Bowl roster, Verrett was completely healthy last season. The cornerback landed on injured reserve for five of his first six NFL seasons.
The 49ers locked up one of their other impending high-priority free agents over the weekend, signing fullback Kyle Juszczyk on a five-year deal reportedly worth $ 27 million.

Barring some development over the next week or so, the San Francisco 49ers appear to be content to allow cornerback Jason Verrett to test free agency. The team is unlikely to close any major deals until the final salary cap is known, and it is unlikely to be a major player at the outset of free agency. Instead, it will likely wait for the dust of the initial frenzy to settle and take a more cautious approach. Verrett is one of the many defensive backs of the 49ers slated for the open market. There was a curious report from Joe Person of The Athletic earlier this month asking the San Francisco 49ers about Carolina Panthers quarterback Teddy Bridgewater. The San Francisco 49ers have apparently re-committed to quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo. A report by Evan Lazar of CLNS Media Network reports that the New England Patriots made inquiries about Garoppolo before re-signing Cam Newton on a one-year deal. Bill Belichick and his company were told that the 49ers’ quarterback, which they traded to San Francisco in 2017, is unavailable. Of course, Lazar added that Garoppolo is “currently” unavailable, which of course caused some extra chatter. It has been speculated that the 49ers may be interested in Sam Darnold. The New York Jets might try to offload the quarterback if they have one
