Ram’s quarterbacks Jared Goff and John Wolford are expected to have open competition for the runway next season if both remain on the roster, said Ian Rapoport from NFL Network.
Goff, 26, has been the Rams’ full-time starting quarterback for the past four years, leading the team to a Super Bowl appearance during the 2018 season. Wolford, 25, has been with the Rams as a backup since signing in April 2019.
Wolford made his first start in LA’s Week 17 win over the Cardinals on January 9 as Goff was recovering from thumb surgery. He was also named starter in the wild card round, but retired early due to a neck injury.
In his win in week 17, Wolford recorded 231 passing yards and 56 rushing yards with one interception.
The Rams reportedly liked “what they saw” from Wolford during the time he played and liked what he showed in training camp, per Rapoport.
As for a possible Goff deal, Rams GM Les Snead left his options open.
“What I can say is that Jared Goff is an Aries right now,” Snead said Tuesday. “It is far too early to speculate about the future. That is a wonderful mystery. “
Goff has had a total of 45 wins in the past four seasons with the Rams, including three playoff wins. That’s the second-highest number in the NFL behind Tom Brady (55). He is under contract until 2024.
