Queen Noor, mother of Jordanian prince Hamzah, blames ‘bad slander’ for son’s detention

Queen Noor, the American-born mother of former Crown Prince Hamzah of Jordan, has denounced the “bad slander” against her son, who says he is under house arrest. Noor tweeted, “Praying that truth and justice will prevail for all innocent victims of this evil slander. God bless and keep them. The former Crown Prince said in a video broadcast on the BBC that he is under house arrest and that several of his friends have been arrested and his security detail removed. The Jordanian army said that Hamzah, who now has no official role in the kingdom , was asked to stop “some activities that could be used to shake up Jordan’s stability and security.” Jordanian official Ayman Safadi told reporters on Sunday that Hamzah had conspired with influential figures at home and abroad “regarding the most appropriate time to take steps to shake the security of our challenging Jordan ”.

The military has denied capturing the former crown prince accused of criticizing Jordan’s king, King Abdullah II, and has said the kingdom is “held back by corruption, cronyism and mismanagement”. Meanwhile, Jordan’s critical allies in the Gulf region have sided with Jordan and expressed support for the king.
