Queen Elizabeth II breaks this tradition after Prince Philip’s death: reports

Queen Elizabeth II does things her own way.

The monarch is currently mourning the death of her husband, Prince Philip, at the age of 99.

In such a situation, tradition generally calls for the queen, 94, to use black-bordered stationery during her mourning period, but according to multiple reports, she will use different personal stationery instead.

According to People magazine, the royal family’s stationery will have its own coat of arms in black. Usually the top is red.

Queen Elizabeth II will not use black-bordered stationery during her mourning period as is traditional, but will use custom stationery with her coat of arms in black.

Other royals including Prince Charles, Camila, Duchess of Cornwall, Prince William and Kate Middleton will follow the tradition and use black-edged stationery.

According to People, the use of such stationery was popular in the 19th century and was followed by Queen Victoria after the death of her husband Prince Albert in 1861.

Envelopes that match the letterhead with a thick black border are used as a sign of mourning.

Despite breaking with the norm, the queen adhered to the tradition of sending Philip a final handwritten note on the black-edged stationery, which was in a bouquet of flowers at his funeral.

Charles, now 72, has followed tradition in the past, most notably after the death of his grandmother and queen mother in 2002.
