Prominent photography director Raúl Pérez Ureta has passed away

The Cuban Institute of Cinematographic Art and Industry reports with deep pain that prominent director of photography Raúl Pérez Ureta passed away in Havana this Wednesday.

Ureta studied journalism, film specialization and theater performance. He started working at the Institute in 1961 as an animation camera assistant in the Cartoons Department. Later he worked as a camera assistant and sound recorder for the Latin American ICAIC Noticiero, until he started as a cameraman in 1965 and worked in more than 800 editions of the weekly news.

Over time, Ureta became a cinematographer and began collaborating with major Cuban film directors. He has also worked for foreign filmmakers such as Fernando Birri and Ruy Guerra.

His filmography includes titles such as Madagascar (Fernando Pérez, 1994), Vertical Love (Arturo Sotto, 1997), Havana Suite (Fernando Pérez, 2003), Perfect Wrong Love (Gerardo Chijona, 2004), The Good Demons (Gerardo Chijona, 2017) ) and Insumisas (Fernando Pérez, 2018).

He was a professor at the San Antonio de los Baños International Film and Television School (EICTV), a member of the Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba (UNEAC) and of the Union of Cuban Journalists (UPEC).
