Prisoners break windows, set fires in St. Louis Jail

Dozens of inmates at a St. Louis jail riot on Sunday night – they broke windows and set fire to the facility, according to reports.

About 60 riot inmates wreaked havoc at the Justice Center on the second and third floors of the facility, starting at approximately 8:45 PM, police told KTVI.

Imagery posted on social media by KSDK reporter Casey Nolan reveal that a number of inmates break third-floor windows while witnesses below cheer them on.

Several inmates held signs outside the windows, according to footage posted to Facebook by Real Stl News, saying “Free Ace” and “Free LJ.”

No one escaped during the chaos, although the inmates dropped an improvised rope from the third floor to a second floor landing, according to images from social media.

By approximately 10:20 p.m., police officers removed the prisoners from the windows, KSDK reported. Shortly afterwards, firefighters put out a fire started by the inmates.

According to reports, inmates then broke windows and set a fire at the back of the building. The second fire was also put out by firefighters.

The chaos on Sunday night comes about two months after 117 inmates in the jai broke free from the cells and caused similar devastation, fires and smashed windows, KSDK said.
