Prince Harry in Oprah interview compares ‘incredibly hard’ royal split to Diana’s experience

Harry said he “can’t imagine what it must have been like” for Diana to have a similar experience, in one of the two videos released from the program.

The discussion marks the first interview the couple have given together since they retired as working members of the royal family last year.

“I’m just really relieved and happy to be sitting here talking to you with my wife by my side,” said Harry in the clip. “Because I can’t imagine what it must have been like for her to go through this process alone all those years ago.”

“It was incredibly difficult for the two of us, but at least we had each other,” he said, sitting next to Meghan in an outdoor set.

In another clip, Harry added that his “main concern was that history was repeating itself,” seemingly another reference to his mother’s experience.

Diana divorced Prince Charles and was largely shunned by the royal family during a much-discussed breakup in the 1990s. She died in a car accident in 1997, and Harry has often criticized the intense media coverage she faced as a contributing factor to her death.

The clips also show Winfrey asking Meghan and Harry a series of questions, although their answers are not seen. At one point, the interviewer tells the couple that there is “no topic that’s off limits” in the discussion, and later she says “you said some pretty shocking things here.”

“Were you silent, or were you silenced?” Winfrey asks Meghan at another point in the promo, who promptly distances himself from the Duchess’s answer. Meghan is not heard in any of the promotional clips.

The interview will air on March 7 and is expected to cover a number of topics, including the support Meghan received from the royals.

Prince Harry says he left royal life because British press 'destroyed' his sanity

Harry and Meghan have not participated in media engagements in the year since they parted ways with the royal family, a move that sparked a crisis at Buckingham Palace in early 2020.

But last week, Harry spoke about the decision in a long part of James Corden’s “Late Late Show,” when the pair came into contact with kinder media figures.

“We all know what the British press can look like, and it destroyed my sanity,” said Harry during the segment with Corden. “I was like, this is toxic. So I did what any husband and what any father would do.”

In February, it was confirmed that the couple would not be returning as working members of the royal family.
