Santa Clara University said in a statement Monday that an independent investigation into the school’s president, Father Kevin O’Brien, is underway.
John Sobrato, chairman of Santa Clara University’s Board of Trustees, said the school had been informed by the US Western County Provincial that it was receiving reports that O’Brien’s behavior was in an adult environment consisting mainly of conversations, that may violate established Jesuit protocols and boundaries. ”
O’Brien was placed on leave as college president pending the outcome of the US Western County inquiry. He has agreed to cooperate in the investigation and “honor the process he confirms annually as part of his ongoing Jesuit education,” Sobrato said.
O’Brien chaired mass for Biden, Vice President Harris, their extended families and congressional leaders at Biden’s inauguration. Mass was held at the Cathedral of St. Matthew the Apostle in Washington, DC, the school announced at the time
The school statement also noted that O’Brien has been a friend of Biden for nearly 15 years and has previously held ceremonies for Biden’s previous inaugurations.
Sobrato’s statement did not specify the charges O’Brien.
Tracey Primrose, a spokesman for the West Province Jesuits, also did not address the charges against The Mercury News.
“Jesuits are bound by a professional code of conduct, and the county is investigating allegations that could violate or compromise established boundaries,” Primrose told the paper.
“The Jesuits in West Province have confidentiality practices, so I cannot provide additional information on this matter,” she continued.
The Hill has reached out to Primrose and the White House for comment.
