According to a report, Pope Francis’ personal physician has died of COVID-19 complications.
Fabrizio Soccorsi, 78, was admitted to Gemelli Hospital in Rome on Dec. 26 for an earlier health problem, the Catholic News Agency reported.
However, the cause of his death was complications from the coronavirus, the outlet reported, citing the Vatican newspaper L’Osservatore Romano.
It is unclear when he last had direct contact with the pontifex.
Francis had set up Soccorsi with his personal doctor in 2015.
The Pope announced on Saturday that he planned to receive a COVID-19 shot next week as part of a vaccination program at the Vatican.
“I think ethically everyone should take the vaccine,” the Pope said in an interview with TV channel Canale 5. “It’s an ethical choice because you gamble with your health, with your life, but you also gamble with lives. . of others.”
