The crash happened at about 2:30 PM on Conchester Highway near Cherry Tree Road, authorities say.
The road was closed in both directions after the crash.
Chopper 6 suffered severe damage to both vehicles, but injury information was not readily available.
“It was weird. It was crazy,” said Brey Dalton, who works at the Exxon at 2400 Market Street and witnessed the crash.
Police say they responded to a report of disorderly behavior.
Upper Chichester Police Says Patrol Sgt. Ken Massey watched the suspect try to pull a woman out of a car at the gas station.
Officials say Massey followed a fight, who tried to deploy his taser, but the suspect was too close.
The suspect managed to avoid the officer and jumped into the police SUV. Dalton explained what he saw next.
“The next thing I know is the police car shoots across and bumps into a truck entering the parking lot … and left,” said Dalton. “I think a cop really hit someone and drove off.”
Police say the driver of that truck tried to stop the suspect, but to no avail.
Investigators say the suspect then fled at high speed down Market Street and then west on 322, where he collided with another vehicle after police said he had passed the central reservation.
Ryan Shomo, who also witnessed the incident, is working near the crash site.
“Probably the worst car accident I’ve seen. The car is just mutilated, ”said Shomo. The front from the back. “
The officer was treated and then released from a local hospital, officials say.
The police will not release the suspect’s name. He is facing a host of potential charges, including aggravated assault and car theft.
“I’ve seen police officers pull people away, but something like … nothing like that,” Dalton added.
A 47-year-old woman who traveled in the other vehicle involved in the crash is in a serious condition, officials say.
The suspect is in critical condition at the last check.
The investigation is still ongoing.
