Police officer in Philadelphia shot while stopping traffic on West Somerville Avenue in the Logan neighborhood of the city

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) – A Philadelphia police officer was shot on Wednesday evening during a traffic stop in the Logan neighborhood of the city.

It happened at 1500 block of West Somerville Avenue just before 7:00 PM

According to Sgt. Eric Gripp of the Philadelphia Police Department, an officer was shot while approaching a vehicle during the traffic stop. A total of five officers were on the scene to assist before the gunfire broke out.

When one of the officers approached the vehicle occupied by four people, Gripp said a 24-year-old man produced a gun inside and started firing.

All five officers fired back and killed the 24-year-old armed suspect. A weapon was found on the spot. It is not yet known how many shots were fired by agents.

Gripp says the officer was shot in the foot and is currently hospitalized in stable condition. Commissioner Danielle Outlaw and the city government are currently hospitalized with the officer and his family.

The three other occupants of the car, a woman and two men, were not injured. They are currently being questioned by the police.

Gripp says it is still unknown at this point that the traffic was halted.
