The Cuban reggaeton Ovidio Crespo – better known in the artistic world as Ovi– He was arrested in Cuba along with Mexican artist Natanael Cano, while both were sharing food and money in a neighborhood in the province of Ciego de Ávila.
Ovi, who lives in the United States, traveled to the island with his friend Nathaniel to see his relatives and so that his friend knew the area where he grew up. What they didn’t expect, however, is that they would be held for about eight hours for handing out aid on the street to people who knew him before he became famous.
“I went to my family who had not seen her for about 3 years and I was very happy to be able to return to the country where I was born. I helped the boys who grew up with me, I helped my relatives. I had some problems there because the government of Cuba is very strange, ”the artist told a Mexican television program, stating that he was selected because he allegedly wanted to form an uprising against the government.
“We started to help the boys in the neighborhood and the police came and asked if we donated money for demonstrations or for counter-revolution. We had a hard time, but thank god I could see my family … We went to the neighborhood where I was born. and wanted to help with my panas money, with food or clothes, but it seems that someone called the police. In Cuba, communism prevails, that no one can be rich, everyone must be poor, “the singer added.
“They arrested us for making a video in the neighborhood, I live in Ciego de Ávila and we started giving money in the neighborhood, to children and the elderly. The police, state security and the army arrived with dogs, they searched us. the camera to see if we spoke to the government, we did nothing wrong, we just helped people, ”he said, although that did not prevent his arrest for a few hours.
After his release, Natanael Cano immediately returned to Los Angeles. The reggaeton player indicated that the Mexican singer had made the decision not to return to Cuba until there is freedom on the island.
Ovi, for his part, stayed with his family for two more days. The singer complained about the dire situation in the country and the poor living conditions in which many Cubans survive.
At just 20 years old, Crespo flew from Cuba to Ecuador and from there crossed several borders on foot for 25 days until reaching the United States.
When he arrived in the country, he had no family or friends and has often confessed to having a bad time. However, thanks to his efforts, he went from securing jobs in Arizona to recording in a Los Angeles studio of his first album, Buen Viaje, under the Rancho Humilde label.
Ovidio Crespo, who is currently 24 years old, went from studying a career in medical sciences in Cuba to being a representative of the so-called “tumbado corridos”, who are breaking new ground in the urban genre by playing the sounds of that genre. combine with Mexican corridos.
