A full set of the first edition of the original Pokemon cards from 1999 recently sold for the astonishing price of $ 666,000. This collection is one of the best-selling in the history of the collectible card trade and serves as a new benchmark for the ever-increasing sales that have taken place in the Pokemon space over the past year.
The sale itself was through Goldin Auctions and not only included every 1st edition card in the original set, but all were graded on the “Gem Mint” condition. If you have no idea what this means, this is essentially the highest level possible when it comes to Pokemon cards with the “Mint” designation right below it. While the differences between the two grading levels aren’t huge on paper, the Gem Mint rating could end up yielding thousands of dollars more in a potential sale.
Probably the crown jewel of the collection came in the form of a unique 1st edition Charizard card. In the past, this card has sold hundreds of thousands on its own. To be bundled with this larger collection, the whole set just got that much more valuable.
Pokemon cards as a whole have gone up dramatically in price over the past year. Some of this is due in part to the general resurgence of interest from longtime fans looking for some of the cards they had as kids. However, the ones who have money to make, namely content creators, have really gone crazy in recent months and shed an even greater light on the scene. In the past week alone, YouTuber Logan Paul revealed that he spent a whopping $ 2 million on Pokemon cards, which is definitely something.
It remains to be seen if this Pokemon card bubble will eventually pop up or if the prices will only keep going up. However, at this current rate, it doesn’t look like these original 1st edition cards will lose their value anytime soon.
