The New Progressive Party (PNP) delegation spokesman in the House of Representatives, Carlos ‘Johnny’ Méndez Núñez, along with San Juan District # 4 Representative Víctor Parés Otero, demanded that the Puerto Rico Energy Bureau shut down immediately with your approved increase in electricity tariff of 0.81 cents per kilowatt hour (kWh).
“This is the second time that the Energy Bureau is promoting an increase in the electricity tariff for our people and, just like last year, we are rejecting these kinds of actions today. Our people are suffering from the onslaught of the COVID-19 pandemic and it can no longer be burdened, quite the contrary. This increase cannot occur, period. We request the Bureau to immediately end this increase, ”Méndez Núñez said in a press release.
The former Speaker of the House of Representatives added that the Bureau “must take into account the realities of the people and it is impossible that this increase they propose will be implemented, none. The PNP delegation in the House of Representatives agrees with the rejection of this action is contrary to the interests of the people ”.
For his part, the representative Parés Otero called this “nonsense”.
“If the Electric Power Authority didn’t know how to manage its finances, that’s not the people’s problem. Our people are suffering, I don’t know if the Bureau’s employees appreciate it, but it’s not going well on the streets if because of the pandemic and there is no way that an increase in basic services can be tolerated. No and no. We have to look for other alternatives, but people will not be overburdened, “he said.
The legislature for San Juan did not rule out the filing of legislation to stop the increase if the Bureau does not.
It appears the Bureau has approved an increase that would result in an additional $ 6.62 in utility bill from the Electric Power Authority (PREPA) for unsubsidized residential customers with an estimated base consumption of 800 (kWh) per month.
The same would take effect immediately.
According to the Bureau, the increase was made because PREPA would have underestimated its operating costs for the months of September, October and November 2020.
