PNP commissioner confirms candidate triumphed for mayor of Guánica by direct nomination

The candidate for direct appointment as the mayor of Guánica, Edgardo Cruz Vélez, has the upper hand against popular candidate, Ismael “Titi” Rodríguez, after more votes were found in his favor, the election commissioner of the New Progressive Party (PNP) said , Héctor Joaquín Sánchez.

According to the official, Cruz Vélez won with 2,390 votes.

“That is why Edgardo Cruz Vélez wins in that match by nine votes.s, ”said Sánchez, emphasizing that the assessment of the Guánica match’s suitcases ended and Only 4 ballots remain.

He explained that after starting to re-verify the 30 suitcases of the Guánica match, Cruz Vélez 19 additional votes in his favor. This brought the number of votes he had to 2,354 compared to Rodriguez’s 2,386.

In addition, Sánchez continued, Cruz Vélez received 27 votes in his favor on mixed ballots, bringing him a total of 2,381 votes.

This put Cruz Vélez and Rodríguez on an equal footing, as five votes had to be subtracted from Rodríguez in the mixed votes, the PPD election commissioner explained.

“Then nine votes were found that had not been awarded in favor of Cruz Vélez in the coffers,” added Sánchez.

He said it remains to be seen where the 4 ballots will be that were voted by direct nomination in favor of Cruz Vélez, but as municipal legislator. Sánchez said these ballots will be discussed at a meeting of the full EEC in the afternoon.

The vote count in Guánica took place today after the Supreme Court ordered the EEC to count all votes cast by the voter on behalf of Edgardo Cruz Vélez, regardless of whether or not he marked the box for direct nomination with an X.

The CEE declared Rodríguez the winner last December and he was sworn in this week. If the EEC cancels Rodríguez’s certification and issues a new one in favor of Cruz Vélez, he will become the new Mayor of Guánica, who was rejected as an official candidate by the PNP and Proyecto Dignidad prior to the race.
