Philippines limits arrivals at Manila airport as the number of Covid cases increases

The Philippines will limit the number of foreign arrivals at Manila main airport to 1,500 passengers per day starting March 18, the Civil Aeronautics Board said, as the coronavirus rose again.

Philippine Airlines said in a Facebook post it could cancel some international flights. Some passengers will also have to postpone their trip to Manila to comply with immigration guidelines, the airline also said. Most foreigners are still not allowed into the country.

The Philippines, which has the second worst outbreak in Southeast Asia, reported daily cases of more than 4,000 on Tuesday for the fifth day, bringing the total number of infections to more than 631,000. The daily count has been the highest since August in recent days, but the increase is seen limited impact on the economy.

Several tourist spots in the historic Intramuros district of the country’s capital are closed until further notice said administrator on his Facebook account. The government has allowed it in recent weeks theme parks along with cinemas and conferences to resume operations as it sought to further open an economy that is likely to sustain recession this quarter.
