Pfizer plans to tap into mRNA technology to create new vaccines for other viruses following the success of its Covid-19 injection, which was developed in collaboration with German partner BioNTech, The Wall Street Journal reported Tuesday.

The drugmaker said it was ready to pursue mRNA on its own after its experience over the past year with the COVID-19 vaccine, the WSJ reported, citing an interview with Pfizer Chief Executive Officer Albert Bourla.

However, it did not disclose details of the viruses it targeted.

Pfizer and BioNTech did not immediately respond to Reuters requests for comment.

Pfizer / BioNTech and Moderna’s Covid-19 vaccines, approved for emergency use in the United States, use mRNA technology.

The technology’s success is prompting drug developers to consider its use in medical fields other than vaccines, generating billions of dollars in investment.
