Personalized medicine is essential for patients and health systems

Mexico City, April 21 (EFE). – The goal of personalized medicine is to benefit the patient and use resources effectively so that both people and health systems can benefit, several experts agreed in a virtual forum on Wednesday.

“We are revolutionizing the diagnosis and clinical classification of diseases,” said Dr. Carmen Aláez, a biologist at the National Institute of Genomic Medicine of Mexico.

During the ‘Rewriting the History of Health, One Patient at a Time’ virtual forum organized by Roche México and Agencia Efe, Aláez pointed out that personalized medicine is not only fundamental, but also offers an opportunity to provide greater sustainability in the countries ‘health systems.

Rachelle Neumann, Communications Leader for Roche Mexico, stressed the importance of conveying the significance of this issue in the voice of several experts in order to get a full picture of the current impact and evolution of personalized medicine as this approach represents a great opportunity to get more accurate diagnoses and treatments for the benefit of all of society.

Betinna Zimmermann, a specialist at Roche Farma Internacional, for her part, said that personalized medicine means that the right patient gets the treatment at the right time that really benefits them.

He explained that there are currently tools that help the patient to get the most benefit from them, such as understanding the genomic profile of each person.

“But personalized medicine aims to provide the best benefit to the patient while using the resources more effectively,” he emphasized.

BEYOND CANCER

While cancer has been the greatest development in personalized medicine, Zimmermann noted that this approach extends to other diseases as well.

“This is because it is promised that the greatest benefits can be obtained because you can attack where you see changes, where a mutation has occurred, and help solve the problem,” he said.

He emphasized the relevance of using data in decision-making “collecting data specific to an area can answer certain questions to develop that data and make better decisions based on local data.”

Carlos Sorroza López, an expert in health economics, explained that cancer is one of the highest cost and one of the most disastrous diseases today.

That’s why he pointed out that the use of personalized medicine can have a major impact on clinical professionals’ decisions and their costs.

“The optimization of health resources, the right treatment, at the right time, benefits health costs,” he said.

He assured that giving the patient the right treatment and that it brings benefits, the overuse of therapies helps patients who will not benefit from the said drug and that it can lead to lower costs.

In conclusion, Kenji López Cuevas, founder of Cancer Warriors de México AC, said personalized medicine has a positive impact on cancer patients and their families because if they have more treatment options, there is also more hope for health recovery.

He indicated that this approach offers more benefits to patients because more precise treatments are given and that the deterioration in health stops or is less affected.

Likewise, he emphasized that the use of personalized medicine brings benefits not only to the patient, but also to public health systems.

“There are benefits to patient health, and significant economic benefits to the efficacy of the drugs, without forgetting that it is a hopeful option for patients,” he concluded. EFE
