Governor Pedro Pierluisi declared three days of mourning today, Tuesday, in memory of the three police officers who were murdered yesterday while on duty in Carolina.
State police officer Luis Marrero Díaz and Carolina city officials Luis Salamán Conde and Eliezer Hernández Cartagena died in hospital after receiving several gunshot wounds in a car chase.
“I deeply regret the pain suffered by the families of these three heroes who were murdered in their duty to protect the lives of everyone on our island. These violent acts and contempt for life cannot have the space we want in Puerto Rico. I have declared three days of mourning in memory of and in honor of our brave police officers who lost their lives. To all their family members, my solidarity and my prayers so that they receive the strength and comfort they need in these difficult times. Our entire city mourns the departure of Luis Marrero, Luis Salamán and Eliezer Hernández, ”Pierluisi said in written statements.
The director added that he had issued instructions to expedite the investigation into this crime, which also resulted in injuries to a fourth police officer.
“I have ordered that the entire investigation is carried out carefully, so that the responsible party (ies) fall under the full weight of the law. We thank our police officers for their courage and dedication to go out every day to defend the people at the risk of their own lives. I am determined to work urgently to empower and empower our uniforms, ”he said.
The prosecution in which the officers lost their lives took place on Baldorioty de Castro Avenue near the Mundo Feliz condominium, on Isla Verde.
Authorities said police were chasing a white Hyundai Accent car when a man allegedly shot them and fled. The car was later found driverless in the Luis Llorens Torres residence.
However, authorities are continuing in the residential area today to find the killer’s whereabouts. During this time, agents of the San Juan Criminal Investigation Corps remain on San José Street, intersection with Muñoz Rivera Avenue, in Santurce, where they found the body of a man with “similar characteristics” to those of the police officers’ alleged murderer.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) also joined the investigation into this crime. whose scene spanned from the Carolina headquarters, the road near the Embassy Suites hotel, and the Luis Llorens Torres residential complex.
