Pediatrician killed hostage at Texas Children’s Hospital

Terminally ill pediatrician Bharat Narumanchi committed suicide on Tuesday and another pediatrician, Lindley Dodson, was held hostage at a children’s medical center in Texas.

The case is considered murder-suicide, according to investigators. Narumanchi was diagnosed as terminally ill with cancer and had only weeks to live, the police said.

Narumanchi applied to volunteer at the medical center a week before the attack, which was the first and only time Dodson and Narumanchi had contact, authorities say.

Dr. Dodson never had direct contact with this man until yesterday. Victoria Ishaak, a staff member at the center at the time of the incident, the Austin told American-Statesman.

At the start of the incident, there were five hostages. Some escaped and others Narumanchi were allowed to leave. Dodson was the only one to stay.

“They were released because they were not doctors,” said Ishaak. “This man didn’t want anything to do with anyone who wasn’t a doctor.”

There was a long standoff with Austin police SWAT agents trying to make contact with Narumanchi during the situation. The officers eventually went in and found Dodson dead from a gunshot wound, along with Narumanchi.

It is not clear why Narumanchi did what he did, but the authorities are speculate that his terminal illness diagnosis played a major role in it.
