Bad news awaits fans of Cillian Murphy and the BBC drama “Peaky Blinders”. The sixth season of the series will be its last, according to a report on Variety.
Created by Oscar-nominated director Steven Knight, the show tells the story of Tommy Shelby (Murphy) and his family’s rise to Birmingham’s working-class post-World War I. Although the series had recently resumed due to the coronavirus, the BBC confirmed that season 6 would close the series.
The move is a bit shocking considering Knight recently sat down with Entertainment Weekly last year hoping the series would continue after Season 6. But based on ongoing global market issues related to filming, it is believed to have accelerated the show’s demise.
“Peaky is back with a bang,” Knight said in a prepared statement. “Following the forced production slowdown caused by the Covid pandemic, we see the family in grave danger and the stakes have never been higher. We believe this is going to be the best series of all and are sure our amazing fans will love it. As the TV series draws to a close, the story continues in a different form. It is believed the series could see a spin-off or a final movie along the lines of the “Deadwood” movie released in 2019.
Together with our great support partners at BBC and Netflix, we’ve worked hard to make sure we can safely get ‘Peaky’ back into production; the safety of our cast and crew is always our priority. Thank you to all of the ‘Peaky’ fans who have been so unwaveringly supportive and patient. Steve’s scripts are incredible and mark the end of an epic story that has thrilled audiences since it first began in 2013, but the world of ‘Peaky Blinders’ will certainly live on, ”executive producer Caryn Mandabach said in a statement.
Peaky Blinders debuted in the UK in 2013. Season 3 saw actor Tom Hardy join the cast and reunite with Knight who worked with him on the feature film “Locke”. The entire series became available to stream via Netflix.
There is currently no word on when the sixth and final season of “Peaky Blinders” will air.
