This Sunday afternoon, sources from the FMLN party confirmed the death of Roberto Cañas, one of the signatories of the peace accords.

Cañas was also part of the negotiating committee that signed the peace accords in the country.

During his professional life he stood out as an economist, analyst and teacher, he died of an illness that he suffered from for years.

Gerson Martínez, member of the FMLN, also regretted Cañas’ departure.

“My condolences to the suffering family, colleagues and friends for the irreparable departure of Licdo. Roberto Cañas, signatory of the peace accords, economist and intellectual who advocated against the dictatorship during the civil war under the name of Rubén Rojas’ struggle ”.

Born in San Salvador on November 21, 1950, Cañas began his political activity at the age of 19 at the University of El Salvador after entering the Faculty of Economics in 1968.

Between 1993 and 1994 he was General Secretary of the University of El Salvador.

In the 2015 municipal and parliamentary elections, Roberto Cañas took part as a candidate for mayor of San Salvador, for the Democratic Change Party (CD).

His remains will be veiled at Funeraria Las Flores between 21 Calle Poniente and 27 Avenida Norte, San Salvador.
