The Ginger Assassin did something no one had done in 30 years
Professional bowler Anthony Neuer did something last Sunday before he was born. In the seventh frame of his US Open semifinal match against Jakob Butturff, 18-year-old Neuer took a reserve by converting a 7-10 split.
Neuer is only the fourth person in history to turn the notoriously difficult split into a televised game, and the first since 1991. It was an incredible feat, which Fox Sports announcer Rob Stone made abundantly clear with his call-up.
“He did it! He did it!” Stone shouted. “He’s got the 7–10, Randy. He did it! Good heavens, the Ginger Assassin just dropped a 7–10. You bet, boy. Sure.”
In fact, 7–10 spare parts on the TV are much rarer than 300 games on the TV. In the history of television bowling, there have been 32 perfect games on TV.
Neuer, the son of PBA Tour winner Andy Neuer, eventually lost the match, but his split conversion will be a moment in history. Before Sunday, Mark Roth (at the Alameda Open in 1980), John Mazza (at the Bud Light Classic in 1990) and Jess Stayrook (at the Tuscon Open in 1991) were the only bowlers to convert the 7-10 split on TV.
‘To be honest, it was pretty cool. I mean, I’m not going to say it was bad, ”said Neuer on the United States Bowling Congress post game show. ‘I did not expect it. I mean I walked away and I looked back and I saw it happen, and I was just shocked. “
It was a great weekend for Neuer. He is brand new to the PBA Tour, finishing third in a major championship, taking home $ 12,000. Not a bad way to spend a Sunday.
